Imagine thinking your spouse is a sexy secret agent for decades only to find out he’s a restaurant critic for fat tire boy magazine
Better yet imagine a real spy getting in trouble and mistaking a restaurant critic for a fellow agent. But the critic takes their job very seriously and won’t reveal themselves and so gets pulled into some kind of huge dangerous conspiracy whilst continuing to take notes on the quality of every restaurant they almost get shot in.
And THIS is why lace was a worn primarily by royalty and aristocracy for so many centuries.. It was expensive and time-consuming to produce. Wearing it, and wearing LOTS of it was a blatant show of wealth and excessive consumption.
Mechanically-produced lace wasn’t really a thing until well into the 20th century, but there remains a wide gap between the quality of mass-produced and hand crafted
In general textile arts are highly underated considering the amount of skill and time needed to execute pretty much anything.
-This comic was started by a friend of mine, who had Carpal Tunnel. She had to relearn how to DRAW, when working on this story.
-Not only that, from my understanding, this is her first, long term story of any sort.
-3. The art. THE ART. Look how it started. Once again, this was coming from an artist who was relearning how to draw with carpal tunnel.
To where it is now.
(I’m not actually completely caught up, I’m only up to Volume 2, so I picked a recent page with no context but it looks sad and that scares the fuck outta me)
-After I finished book 2, I couldn’t believe how intricate and fascinating the world and it’s characters were. Everyone is interesting, and especially as the writers got further into the story, it just– it feels like EVERY conversation between characters have two sides to it.
I keep thinking back to different conversations, especially within volume 2, that keep striking me. This is some EXTREMELY good writing, that has been sticking with me. I need to reread volume 1, because there is so much I feel like I missed, and I gotta go back on. (I also read Vol 1 months before Vol 2, so my memory was hazy.)
This story scares me- because I don’t know where it’s going at all. Like, the moment volume 2 really started hitting me, I have so many questions I’m scared to know answers to.
The world is also really REALLY well built?? Like. This comic is doing a lot of things I conceptualize within my own stories, and its stunning.
It’s also incredibly diverse, with fascinating cultures and characters and interactions– jeese it’s very well done.
Especially where the state of the world in-comic is today, it’s built very ORGANICALLY. Like, situations of the past built up in ways people did not expect, to create the political environment of the story as it is currently. It just feels VERY realistic with how its portrayed- I feel like I’m reading a real world, with real characters. I feel like this is a real country I’m reading about.
I literally ended reading Volume 2 in dismay, because now I finally gotta actually read comics online (believe it or not, I might do webcomics but its hard as heck for me to get on the computer and READ any, even if its made by friends. Sorry friends.)
I can’t explain this half as well as I’d like. Dangit.
MY POINT IS
THIS IS CURRENTLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE STORIES, AND NO ONE REALLY KNOWS IT EXISTS.
So please, I’m rambling, but check it out at it’s sites.
It deserves more attention than it gets. And- this is their first real work. Like, I’ve been making comics for like 20 years. This is their first REAL SERIOUS WORK, and the passion and dedication behind it- I’m amazed at how good it is on every turn.So. Please check it out, it’s well worth a read.
